Fibre and gut health: where the research stands

Fibre feeds the bacteria in your large intestine, which in turn produce short-chain fatty acids linked to gut and metabolic health. That much is well established.

Most adults eat far less fibre than recommended. The practical fix is unglamorous: more legumes, whole grains, vegetables and fruit — variety matters as much as quantity. Supplements rarely beat a diverse plate.
